INDIANA COALITION FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION TO HOST ROUNDTABLE CONVERSATIONS ON ADVOCATING FOR THE SCHOOLS OUR KIDS NEED
Topics include testing, equity, vouchers, and the MCCSC referendum
Bloomington, Indiana—The challenges that confront public schools are many. Testing requirements are stringent, but the grading system for schools rewards the affluent. Public dollars are flowing to vouchers and charters, while treasured public school programs lack secure funding. For community members who find these trends concerning, local public education advocates will host “Advocating for the Schools Our Kids Need,” a set of facilitated roundtable conversations, Wednesday, June 8, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Methodist Church, 100 N. State Road 46 Bypass.
After an introduction to the organization, participants will have the opportunity to visit three of six tables, each with a different topic. Areas of focus include A-F grading of schools and testing; social justice and equity; the MCCSC referendum; vouchers and charters; ALEC; and political action. The goal is to build a knowledge base for advocacy, and the evening will conclude with a call for action.
Table hosts include retired Indiana University School of Education faculty, retired public school teachers and administrators, and parents. The evening will be facilitated by Debbie Fish, a former principal, special education teacher, and staff developer—and current board member of the state level Indiana Coalition for Public Education.
This event is sponsored by the Monroe County chapter of the Indiana Coalition for Public Education (http://icpe-monroecounty.weebly.com/; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Monroe-County-Coalition-Public-Education/374573205902510).
