How you can help fight for public education

ICPE, Monroe County, can use help in numerous ways.
  • Help us spread the word at the Farmer's Market. You don't need to be an expert on education policy to help! It's easy and only requires a couple hours of commitment on a Saturday.
  • Minutes from MCCSC School Board Meetings. We do our best to provide unofficial minutes to the MCCSC School Board meetings and work sessions to help keep community members that can't attend, informed. Footage of the meetings is available through Community Access Television at CATStv.net.
  • Content Development. We need writers and researchers that can help build out content for our web site to help keep our community informed.
  • Coding. ICPE would like to develop an easy way for the community to contact their representatives via our site when important issues pop up. An auto-generator that other groups have on their sites, like this one.
  • SPEAK. SPEAK (Supporting Public Education And Kids) is a local group composed of ICPE members and community members who gather to write letters to local and state newspapers throughout Indiana in support of public education. Letters are also written to state and house legislators challenging bills that will result in a loss of funds or services to public schools in Indiana. SPEAK meets at the Monroe County Public Library in room 214. Anyone looking for a “spot of time” to write is welcome to attend our SPEAK writing group. Meeting announcements are listed here and on the Herald-Times. SPEAK is facilitated by Wendy Marencik and Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer.

ICPE, I have no time to volunteer but I want to do something!

Here are some easy things to do:
  • Thank a teacher.
  • Check in on your teacher and make sure they're okay.
  • Advocate for community involvement in community schools. Advocate for recess, library, music, science, social studies, p.e., and art. Insist on stable funding and well-resourced schools. Be the parent or community member that questions their local school when children lose recess, are lacking a librarian, don't seem to have enough music, art, or gym.
  • Vote.
