How you can help fight for public education

ICPE, Monroe County, can use help in numerous ways.
  • Minutes from Local Public School Board Meetings. We would love to have volunteers to attend public school board meetings at RBBCSC (Ellettsville) and MCCSC (Bloomington) as well as charter schools SOCS (Ellettsville) and TPS (Bloomington). Meeting times are listed in our monthly meeting agendas, which can be found in our monthly Five Things newsletters.
  • Got a good story or research project? We need writers and researchers that can help build out content for our web site to help keep our community informed.
  • Helping run events. Many of our events need helpers to set up and welcome people. From bringing along bottled water for speakers to running the sign-in sheet. Low commitment.
  • SPEAK. SPEAK (Supporting Public Education And Kids) is a local group composed of ICPE members and community members who gather to write letters to local and state newspapers throughout Indiana in support of public education. Letters are also written to state and house legislators challenging bills that will result in a loss of funds or services to public schools in Indiana. Anyone looking for a “spot of time” to write is welcome to attend our SPEAK writing group. Meeting announcements are listed here.
  • Testify at the statehouse. Got a free day and are passionate about a piece of education legislation? We can help guide you in speaking at the statehouse.
  • Letter to the editor. Passionate about a piece of education legislation, but would rather write about it? We can help you submit a letter to the editor of your local paper.

ICPE, I have no time to volunteer but I want to do something!

Here are some easy things to do:
  • Thank a teacher.
  • Check in on your teacher and make sure they're okay.
  • Public schools are the heart of the community. Advocate for community involvement in community schools. Advocate for recess, library, music, science, social studies, p.e., and art. Insist on stable funding and well-resourced schools. Be the parent or community member that questions their local school when children lose recess, are lacking a librarian, don't seem to have enough music, art, or gym.
