November 9, 2015 Dear friends of public education, We need your help. Seven Oaks Classical charter school is seeking authorization from the private evangelical Grace College to open in Monroe County, at the Eagles Landing building in Ellettsville. If they are authorized and take students from MCCSC or RBB school districts, this could mean a potential loss of nearly $2 million annually from these school systems, and up to $3.5 million if they expand to include a high school as planned. No state organization will decide this. A recommendation will be made by the Grace College Office of Charter staff and a review committee, and voted upon by the Grace board of trustees. We need to show them that this school is not wanted or needed in our community. Possible talking points: |
What do you love about your school, and what would you fear losing if we lost that money? (We in ICPE fear for librarians, arts, music, band, and sports, and would expect an increase in class sizes.) You could mention the referendum we passed in MCCSC to maintain the quality and breadth of what our school district can offer.
Seven Oaks claims that it would provide a "classical" education with an emphasis on the liberal arts--sciences, humanities, and arts. We can affect Grace's decision by writing letters supporting keeping resources for science, humanities, and the arts in our public schools that are open to all. While Seven Oaks claims it will educate all children, it will require uniforms and provide neither transportation nor meals, making it impractical for families in poverty.
Seven Oaks claims that its students will receive character education. Do your children/students and their classmates lack character or ethics?
It doesn't have to be fancy or long or even very well-written. Just write your objections and tell Grace College that you are opposed to the chartering of the Seven Oaks school.
