Hello, my name is Katie Russell, and I am a preservice teacher who will graduate from the IU School of Education in May. I am opposed to the authorization of Seven Oaks Classical School.
I have the honor and the privilege of having my current field experience in an MCCSC elementary school. The particular population of children I work with come from primarily low income families and depend greatly on the services the school offers, such as transportation, free meals, counseling from social workers, intervention from literacy and math professionals, and of course top teachers. My concern with Seven Oaks is that it will not be an equitable option for students and that the proposed one million dollars that could be taken from MCCSC would negatively affect the children I work with.
From my understanding, transportation and meals will not be provided. The children I work with receive a free breakfast and lunch every day. They also receive free transportation to and from the school. The children I work with cannot attend a school without these. Not every family has access to these or can afford these.
Another concern of mine is that the movement of the money from a public school to this charter school will result in additional cuts to important services that MCCSC offers. Many children I work with bring baggage and trauma from home which is unpacked and processed with the help of social workers and teaching professionals. Teachers I work with have already voiced their concerns about losing social workers and other services for kids. I ask you to reject the proposal and support true public education. Thank you!
