I am the mother of two children in MCCSC schools, and also frequently visit MCCSC schools as part of my work with Indiana University’s Biology Outreach Program. I spent two hours in kindergarten classes at Fairview Elementary just this afternoon. Some speakers tonight have said that we need Seven Oaks because our local public schools are failing our students. I completely disagree. Our local public schools are doing a great job! In all of the schools that I’ve worked in, I’ve seen teachers, administrators, and other staff that are fully devoted to the education of their students, including their intellectual, social, and moral development. Our local schools are managing this with very limited resources, though. Devoted and skilled teachers are making the very most of what they have, but are operating on the edge. With budgets so tight, the loss of funds to Seven Oaks has the potential to cause real harm to our public schools and students. I urge you to deny Seven Oaks application. This new charter is not needed, and is a threat to the wonderful system that we already have.
