INDIANA COALITION FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION PRESENTS FORUM FOR LOCAL LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATES
House 46, 60, and 62 candidates will introduce themselves, answer audience questions
Bloomington, Indiana—Legislative candidates in three contested Indiana House races will share their views on education at a forum on Monday, October 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., in the Bloomington City Hall Council Chambers at 401 N. Morton St.
In the last several years, Indiana’s lawmakers have re-shaped education policy in our state. They have increasingly diverted public education funds to charter schools and to private schools through vouchers. Laws have also emphasized high-stakes testing and grading of schools while lowering standards for teachers and administrators.
Educators are running against incumbents in three districts that include parts of Monroe County, and they will participate in Monday’s forum. High school teacher Jim Mann is challenging Bob Heaton in District 46, former principal Daymon Brodhacker is challenging Peggy Mayfield in District 60, and principal Jeff Sparks is challenging Matt Ubelhor in District 61. As of this writing, forum organizers have received no response from Bob Heaton, Ashley Qualkenbush (libertarian candidate for House 62), or Matt Ubelhor. Peggy Mayfield will not be able to attend.
After introducing themselves and identifying the education issues that they see as pressing, candidates will answer questions from the audience. Questions for candidates may also be submitted in advance to [email protected].
This event is sponsored by the Indiana Coalition for Public Education--Monroe County and South Central Indiana (http://icpe-monroecounty.weebly.com/).
