Minutes [approved]
Indiana Coalition for Public Education - Monroe County and South Central Indiana
Business Meeting
Monday, October 6, 2014 -- 9:30 - 11:00 am
Cathy’s house, Bloomington
I. Welcome and Introductions -- C. Fuentes-Rohwer
Larry Barber, Lou Ann Easton, Roger Fierst, Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer, Phil Harris, Judy Maki, Carolyn McClary, Jenny Robinson, Bob Shanks, Linda Shanks.
Larry Barber, school board candidate for District 1, introduced himself: He sees the use of ISTEP to assess children’s achievement and teachers’ work as unethical and immoral; this is not what the test was designed for. While MCCSC needs to comply with the law, he would lead a fight against the misuse of testing. The local issues that he sees are of transparency, teacher trust, and equity. He desegregated a school district in Kentucky and knows you have to bring the community along. He wants child-centered schools. Another issue is program evaluation. He has done massive consulting on this topic. You need to have goals and objectives for all programs, they need to be measurable, and you need data to assess.
The conversation was lively and Larry Barber and Phil Harris left around 10:30.
II. Agenda: approved.
III. Minutes; we need to go through and approve a backlog. Jenny will post and we need a record of what get’s approved, when.
IV. Treasurer's Report and Membership—J. Maki
V. Other Reports
A. Board of Directors
R. Fierst: State ICPE added two new board members, Rocky Killion and Pat Paine. They are about to sign another contract with Joel Hand, and it will be more expensive this year, probably $24,000. They are looking for Democrats to serve on an ICPE PAC committee.
D. Fish recommended Jim Mervelde, a former superintendent of Washington township.
R. Fierst will be gone for four months and wants a replacement on the state board starting in February. They meet the first Friday of the month at 1 pm. D. Fish agrees to take this on.
B. Communications and Web Site
C. Programs
1. Rise Above the Mark, September 24 (debrief). This went well.
2. ICPE school board forum, Oct. 16. Candidates should have three minutes at beginning, one to answer questions.
3. Legislative forum: C. Fuentes-Rohwer: we’ve invited everybody.
4. Annual meeting: R. Fierst suggests having a comment session half way through, that members bring new faces, and that we advertise the annual meeting to the list.
VI. Political News
Write a letter to the editor for school board and/or a legislative race.
VII. New Business
VIII. Other
Respectfully submitted,
Jenny Robinson
