INDIANA COALITION FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION PRESENTS COMMUNITY CONVERSATION ON EARLY LITERACY
Panel of early childhood educators to discuss how young children learn to read
Bloomington, Indiana—Pressure continues to grow on schools to teach children to read at ever younger ages, but what do research and teachers’ experiences tell us about how young children learn? “Should There Be an IREAD-2? A Community Conversation on Early Literacy” will feature a panel discussion by local early childhood educators on Thursday, February 5, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Library, Room 1C.
One bill proposed in the general assembly this session would have shifted the mandatory IREAD test to grade 2 from grade 3. While that bill was remanded to summer study, rules for schools impact instruction in the classroom. When legislators with no training or experience as educators are essentially making curricular decisions for our children, parents and the general public need to have more information about those decisions’ potential impact.
In Thursday’s forum, panelists will discuss characteristics of early childhood, the normal range of reading development, and teaching practices and school environments that encourage children to become enthusiastic and skilled readers and writers in the long term.
Participants will include Sharon Daley, a professor in the school of education at Indiana University; Meg Emmett, the librarian at Grandview Elementary; Ceci Maron-Puntarelli, the director of St. Mark’s Nursery School and Kindergarten; and Sarah Murray, a kindergarten teacher at Childs Elementary.
Audience members will be invited to ask questions after the panel discussion.
This event is sponsored by the Indiana Coalition for Public Education--Monroe County and South Central Indiana (http://icpe-monroecounty.weebly.com/; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Monroe-County-Coalition-Public-Education/374573205902510).
