I am Todd Lare, Executive Director of South Central Community Action Program, Inc. Just over a year ago, our organization made an offer on Eagle’s Landing, the building proposed for this charter school. At the time, Seven Oaks approached us about potentially renting a good portion of the building from us. Our project subsequently fell through due to a number of reasons, including the extensive amount of renovation required to make the facility useable and safe.
As it stands, Eagle’s Landing will require extensive renovation including checking for lead-based paint and remediating it if found. There are also severe roofing problems to the extent that it was practically raining inside a portion of the building. This moisture obviously can lead to mildew and mold, as well as damage to other systems – including HVAC, wiring, and plumbing. Openings in the roof also leave the ability for pests to enter the building.
The building is also not fully ADA compliant in that there are multiple building levels and in the back portion of the building there is not elevator access to make classroom space useable.
Let me be clear – this building can be rehabilitated and made into a great facility, but with the age of all of its systems and its present condition, the cost to do so will be great. This seems like a huge waste of resources when both Monroe County school systems have excellent, well-maintained facilities. It is certainly a high price to pay for a Burger King “have it your way” education for a few at the expense of everyone else.
