“Did Mary’s mother get arrested the night before? Did Johnny not come with shoes to school? Those to me are not core issues of education.”

INDIANA COALITION FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION PRESENTS COMMUNITY CONVERSATION ON HOW SCHOOLS SUPPORT THE WHOLE CHILD
Panel of educators to discuss connections between health and learning
Bloomington, Indiana—The writer of the 2015 Indiana House budget proposal may not believe that family upheaval or poverty are education issues, but parents and teachers know that children’s basic needs must be met in order for them to learn and grow to their best potential. What are those needs? How do our schools work to give children from diverse backgrounds optimal conditions for learning? “Whole Child, Healthy Child: Helping Kids Thrive in School” will feature a panel discussion by local educators on Monday, April 6, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Library, Room 1B.
In Monday’s forum, panelists will discuss children’s developmental needs—physical, social, and emotional. From nutrition to stable relationships to outdoor play and exercise, how do school programs and support services promote children’s well being? How are those efforts enhanced through community partnerships? How can we support and expand existing health-focused programs?
Participants will include Felice Cloyd, physical education teacher at Highland Park Elementary; Ann Huntoon, lecturer in kinesiology at Indiana University; Mary McMullen, professor of early childhood education at Indiana University; Rebecca Rose, director of student services for the Monroe County Community School Corporation; and Bronwyn Shroyer, social worker at Childs and Templeton Elementaries.
A moderated question-and-answer period will follow the panel discussion.
This event is sponsored by the Indiana Coalition for Public Education--Monroe County and South Central Indiana (http://icpe-monroecounty.weebly.com/; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Monroe-County-Coalition-Public-Education/374573205902510).
